What moves the price

  • How often

Weekly collections cost more a year than four-weekly ones, but each visit can be cheaper because the route is regular.

  • How many containers

Price usually rises per console or bin emptied. A survey of where paper is created avoids paying for containers nobody uses.

  • On site or off site

A shredding vehicle at your door costs more than collection for shredding at a facility.

  • Security level

Finer particle sizes for highly sensitive material take longer and may cost more. Most office paper does not need the finest levels.

  • Access and labour

Stairs without a lift, distant store rooms and parking restrictions add crew time on large purges.

  • Contract terms

Container rental, minimum terms, fuel surcharges and price rises at renewal. Ask for them in writing.

Where these prices come from

Per-sack, per-collection and hourly figures are typical ranges from published UK price guides, autumn 2026, summarised by us. One Scottish council's internal charge for confidential sacks in 2026/27 was £20.80 a sack, inside the typical range. Hard drive and laptop prices are from a supplier's pricing document on the government Digital Marketplace (G-Cloud 15, January 2026). Contract values come from award notices on Contracts Finder, each linked in the table. Everything was read in November 2026.

Questions about cost

How much does confidential waste disposal cost?

For a small office on a schedule, published guide prices start at about £45 a visit for one or two containers, and comparison sites quote national firms at up to about £65. One-off sacks typically cost £20 to £40, with a minimum of about £50 per collection.

How much does it cost to shred a sack of paper?

Published prices range from about £12.50 to £45 a sack, with most between £20 and £40. Bulk jobs are usually cheaper per sack than a handful.

Is VAT included in shredding prices?

Business price guides rarely say. Public contract values on award notices often do not state it either. Ask for every price net of VAT, then the figures line up side by side.

Is a regular contract cheaper than one-off collections?

Per visit, usually yes: guide prices show regular off-site collections from about £45 against ad hoc collections from about £50. The bigger saving is that consoles stop paper piling up and needing a large purge later.

How much does hard drive destruction cost?

For large on-site batches a supplier's pricing on the government Digital Marketplace shows £2 to £2.60 a drive for 250 to 1,000 drives. Small batches are usually quoted per job.

What do public bodies pay for confidential waste contracts?

Published award values range from £2,500 over four years for one office to £118,605 over three years for a hospital trust's on-site service. They are in the table above, each linked to its notice.
